"I
Live In America" is an illustrated tour of America from
the perspective of the artist, Elizabeth Nelson. She and
her husband, Bob, either lived in or visited all of the
places depicted in her paintings. It is a lively look
at some of the sites and institutions that make America
such a unique country.
Our tour starts at Ellis Island and The Statue of Liberty,
where millions of immigrants from Europe and other continents
came into America. Many immigrants settled in New York
City, which is represented by a scene from Central Park
(which celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2003).
We then move on to our nation's capital, with a dramatic
view of the Capitol Building.
Next is the Outer Banks of North Carolina and a representation
of the Wright Brothers' flight just 100 years from its
happening.
We then jump to Chicago, where both Elizabeth's and Bob's
parents were married and they were born. Chicago is the
starting point of Route 66, our next destination. Among
other states, it runs through Kansas. Here we see a tornado
in full flight, with a whimsical "tip of the hat" to L.
Frank Baum and "The Wizard of Oz" characters. As we move
westward, we encounter the American Cowboy, an institution
in its own right.
Thanksgiving is depicted on the Osborn Farm near Loveland,
Colorado, although it is celebrated all over our great
country. We then travel on to Las Vegas, one of our most
unusual cities with a fascinating history. Next is Los
Angeles, "City of Glamour and Glitz" - among other things!
Next it's "North to Alaska!" to view one of the last vestiges
of unspoiled land and wildlife in our country. We end
with our western-most state, Hawaii; doesn't that scene
just make you want to be there?!
Our tour ends with a montage of American institutions
set on our great flag.
Each of these illustrations is accompanied by Historical
Background notes, which give a brief overview. In the
Epilogue, we finish with a tribute to America, still a
haven for immigrants from around the world and still the
land of opportunity. We hope that you enjoy both the illustrations
and the historical notes in this fun book - and that you
look forward to Elizabeth's and Bob's next effort - "I
Live On Planet Earth."
